Plaid Gomiwnyddol Cymru (the Communist Party of Wales) condemns the criminal attack launched by the United States of America against the sovereign Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday the 3rd of January. In a naked act of war and imperialist aggression, the US military bombed both civilian and military areas in and around Venezuela’s capital of Caracas and deployed special forces to kidnap its president, Nicolás Maduro.
This is yet another escalation of a decades long campaign of colonial terror aimed at punishing the people of Venezuela for their refusal to submit to Western capital and surrender the natural resources and wealth to the American imperial machine. With the goal of subjecting the people and vast resources of Venezuela to exploitation, the US has sought by any means possible to cause hunger, desperation and division, undermining the Venezuelan socialist project and its unwavering commitment to anti-imperialism. Faced with its failure to achieve this through criminal blockades, sabotage, sanctions, psychological warfare and outright theft of Venezuelan resources such as oil and gold, the US has resorted to open military aggression in flagrant violation of the so-called international order it claims to uphold.
The abduction of Venezuela’s president Nicolás Maduro and his wife demonstrates not only the US’ cowardice but also the lack of understanding of its leadership. The transformation of Venezuelan society, beginning in 1999 with the Bolivarian Revolution, cannot be halted by the targeting of any individual. It is the organised working masses of Venezuela, in their consciousness and creative action, that are the subjects and custodians of the Bolivarian Revolution.
We wish to echo the following words of our comrades in Fuerza Patriótica Alexis Vive:
Faced with this imperialist offensive, the Venezuelan people respond with the war of the whole people, not as an abstract slogan, but as concrete practice in defence of life, territory and sovereignty. The war of the whole people is an organised commune, a conscious barrio and a land in resistance. It is civic-politico-military unity in the service of the working masses. It is popular organisation capable of sustaining production, supply, communication and collective protection even under the most adverse circumstances.
We do not deceive ourselves: imperialism can deploy advanced technology, mercenaries, covert operations, media terror campaigns and open attacks against our sacred land. However we count on what they will never have: historical legitimacy, deep roots in the land and a people prepared to defend their right to exist. Each imperialist aggression will strengthen our organisation; each attempt at strangulation will multiply our solidarity; each threat reaffirms our resolve to win.
Our warning is clear: any escalation against Venezuela will have consequences that imperialism will not be able to control. The people do not surrender, they do not forget and they do not kneel. Venezuela is not Iraq, it is not Libya and it is not alone. Here there is revolution, here there is an organised people and here there is indissoluble resolve for independence.
To Donald Trump and to the imperialist machine he represents we say with the voice of the barrio, the commune and of history: hands off Venezuela. We will not give up our oil, we will not give up our homeland, and we will not give up our dignity.
This is not an isolated act but comes in the context of increasing imperialist aggression globally, from the zionist entity’s war of extermination against the people of Palestine to US threats against Iran, driven by prolonged economic stagnation in the centres of global capitalism. The imperialist monopoly bourgeoisie, unable to resolve this crisis of overproduction and the looming climate catastrophe, seek to intensify and expand their neocolonial exploitation, aiming to turn nations like Venezuela who resist international capitalism into occupied colonial territories administered by a global Anglo-American empire. In Latin America, this is taking the form of desperate attempts by the US to reinforce its hegemony at any cost.
Plaid Gomiwnyddol Cymru also notes that this act of aggression towards the people of Venezuela is not only led by the American empire. The British state, complicit in the theft of Venezuelan gold, has continued to back the American empire waging a war of aggression against the Venezuelan people. In November 2025, British navy personnel were deployed to American ships operating in the Caribbean, and it is likely that some of them were present on Saturday morning to monitor the attack on the Venezuelan people and their sovereignty. There is no doubt that British finance will try and carve out a chunk of Venezuela’s wealth for itself following this, which will we resolutely oppose.
This imperialist offensive is therefore ultimately targeted not just at Venezuela but at all of Latin America and the world. It is the duty of revolutionary and anti-imperialist forces on a global scale to resist this escalation by any means necessary. Plaid Gomiwnyddol Cymru stands in resolute solidarity with the people of Venezuela, with their legitimate right to self-defence and with working masses of the Bolivarian Revolution.
